Achieves Eagle Scout Rank
|
Dunwoody, GA (April 25, 2011) – Boy Scout Troop 477, chartered to Kingswood United Methodist Church, is pleased to announce that Casey Anthony
Myers Shaw, son of Gin and Alan Shaw of Dunwoody, has earned the rank of
Eagle Scout, the highest rank awarded by the Boy Scouts of America. Casey
completed his Eagle Board of Review on March 13 and becomes the 99th Eagle
Scout from Troop 477, since it was created in 1972.
Casey began scouting as a Tiger Cub with Pack 477 in 1999 and became a Boy
Scout in 2004, joining Troop 434 for 2 years before returning to Troop 477
in 2006. Casey participated in many of the troop’s outdoor activities and
service projects and held several troop leadership positions, including
Patrol Leader and Instructor. He was inducted into the Order of the Arrow in
2009. Casey completed two Boy Scout High Adventure treks, enjoying a 10-day
adventure at the Northern Tier High Adventure base in Minnesota in 2008
where he and 6 other Scouts paddled more than 70 miles in the wilderness and
a 9-day adventure to Sea Base in the Florida Keys in 2009 where he paddled
11 miles in the open ocean, earned his scuba diving certification,
snorkeled, went deep-sea fishing and survived 5 days on a primitive island.
Casey’s Eagle Scout project was to clear an overgrown and under-utilized 1.2
mile stretch of a running/walking/biking nature trail on the Mercer
University campus. The project involved moving downed trees from the trail,
clearing a substantial amount of brush, repairing trail signage and clearing
access to an unusable picnic area.
Casey is a senior at St. Pius X High School where he has lettered for 4
years in Track and Cross Country and was Captain of the 2010 3A State
Championship Cross Country team. Casey has attended the past 8 Olympic Games
(Atlanta, Nagano, Sydney, Salt Lake City, Athens, Torino, Beijing and
Vancouver) and is considering studying International business in college. He
was accepted to the 5 universities to which he applied: University of
Georgia, College of Charleston, Loyola of New Orleans, University of South
Carolina and University of Alabama and will make his decision soon.
Casey is a member of the National Honor Society and Dean’s List and placed
6th in Georgia and 8th nationally on the Grand Concours National French
Exam. He was a Lion Leader at St. Pius and took 6 AP courses in the past 3
years. Casey and his family attend All Saints Catholic Church.
Troop 477 and the Scouting community will join with Casey, his family and
friends in celebration of his achievement at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor
to be held at 3:00pm, Sunday May 8 in the Sanctuary at Kingswood United
Methodist Church. A reception will be held immediately following the
ceremony in the Fellowship Hall.
