PACK TWILIGHT CAMPOUT and TIGER
ROUNDUP, 4/27/08, AT BROOK RUN PARK (RAINOUT IS AT
THE CHURCH, 4/28/08, AT 7:00 PM)
This celebration of spring is
our Pack's way of getting the scouts outside and
playing. The twilight campout is everything we adults
like about camping, without sleeping on the ground. The
Pack will get together Sunday afternoon, play a bunch of
games, learn some outdoor stuff, and eat a bit. I will
send out more details will be provided once we hammer
them out.
This activity is also the Pack's first recruiting event
for rising Tigers (other recruiting efforts are
performed in the late summer / early fall). We will be
showing those parents what cub scouting is all about. If
you know any parents of boys presently in Kindergarten,
please forward this e-mail to them.
If we have a rainout, we will have a regular Pack
meeting at the Church, at 7:00 PM on Monday. The program
for that meeting is our famous Oreo Stacking contest.
PACK CROSSOVER, 7:00 PM,
5/19/08, AT CHURCH
This Pack meeting is where the
scouts cross over into their next rank: Tigers become
Wolves, Wolves become a herd of Bears, and Bears are
welcomed into the Webelos ranks. The Pack distributes
handbooks, neckerchiefs, neckerchief slides and hats to
all registered scouts.
DECORATING MARIETTA
NATIONAL CEMETERY FOR VETERANS DAY
Mustering up at 8:00 AM, 5/24/08 in the
Church's parking lot.
This annual event draws hundreds if not thousands of Cub
Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venturers, and Boy Scouts to place
flags in front of each veteran's headstone in the
Marietta National Cemetery. The Pack joins in this
effort as well, and we find it a good way to take pride
in our nation and in our families, many of whom have
veterans. We will provide coffee, donuts and juice to
scouts and parents that morning, and then will caravan
over to the Cemetery. After placing the flags, we will
ask the scouts to tell us about their families'
veterans, if they want to do so. Some of the stories are
engaging, and all of the stories allow us to remember
those who've given so much to our country.
CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP,
6/16/08 - 6/20/08, AT CROSS KEYS HIGH SCHOOL.
Cub scouting is all about
getting outside, having fun, creating art and crafts,
woodworking, learning outdoor lore, getting dirty,
playing games, engaging in water wars, shooting bows &
arrows and shooting BB rifles! I encourage all of you to
block out this week to allow your scout to attend the
Hightower Trail District's Cub Scout Day Camp. We don't
have any specific information on the camp as yet, but
the camp typically runs from about 8:30 AM through about
3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Its price point is
fairly low, as it is staffed by boy scouts and parents
of cub scouts.
A caveat: the camp typically requires from each Pack 1
adult volunteer for 5 days for every 4-5 scouts
attending. I have volunteered at this day camp several
years, and assure you that it's a whole lot of fun.
Another caveat: the Pack will not be able to offer $25
scholarships to campers this year to any camper. If
there is a need, there are sources of funds from the
Atlanta Area Council. Please contact me directly and I
will connect you with the right person to assist you in
the matter.
WEBELOS OVERNIGHT CAMPS,
DATES TBD, LOCATION TBD.
Your Den leaders should have received information on the
Webelos overnight camp programs, and will be forwarding
proposals of dates and locations to you as soon as
they've figured it out. I encourage you to send your
Webelos scout (this includes the present Bear scouts who
become Webelos scouts in May) to this overnight camp.
It's a great taste of Boy Socut summer camp, and it
knocks out about 6 of the Webelos Activity pins in the
process. The camp generally is four days long, and your
scout will sleep in camp-provided tents for three
nights. Food will be provided by the camp, and the camp
has on-site fist-aid staff. The fee for the camp was
about $80-$90 last year when I and my son went, and I
don't' expect it to be much different this year.
A caveat: the camp typically requires two adults for the
first 5 or 6 Webelos scouts, and 1 more adult for every
4 scouts after that. I'm not sure about the ratios this
year, but if your group is large, the Den leader will
need adults to attend the camp as well to get the ratios
up.
Another caveat: the Pack will not be able to offer $25
scholarships to campers this year to any camper. If your
Den is going to the camp on Lake Lanier (where our Pack
has had great success), which is another BSA Council,
there will be no sources of funds to provide
scholarship. If your Den is going to the Bert Adams
camp, there may be a way for the Council to provide
scholarships.
