In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. Leader Appreciation Day
Tuesday, April 22

Think of how wonderful it is when someone acknowledges your hard work and gives you a pat on the back. That's what National Girl Scout Leader Appreciation Day is all about and this year it is being celebrated Tuesday, April 22. This is the perfect time for girls throughout the council to show a special leader how much they appreciate them.

The Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia would like to recognize the leaders who make our program one of the greatest there is, but we need your help. On this special day we ask that you say "thank you" to leaders who give selflessly of their time to build the spirits and minds of girls as they grow to become young women of courage, confidence and character.

Recognize these special people by encouraging girls throughout the council to say "thank you!" But don't stop there; listed below are many other ideas that are sure to brighten any leader's day:

  • Send a thank-you card or letter
  • Give a gift from the Badge & Sash
  • Bake a treat or dinner
  • Send flowers or balloons
  • Make a handmade craft
  • Recognize a leader in your own special way

And remember to simply say...

Thank You!

Change It Up! What Girls Say About Redefining Leadership

New Girl Scout Research Institute study

Rock wall

The Girl Scout Research Institute recently conducted a nationwide study of 2,475 girls and 1,514 boys ages eight to 17 to find out how they view leadership. Surprisingly, it found that more than half of American girls say they don't aspire to be leaders and find the command-and-control style of leadership to be unappealing. While girls are more likely than boys to be leaders because of their desire to help others and share their knowledge and skills, boys are more likely to be motivated by the potential power, money and desire to be their own boss.

"It's clear from the research that girls today don't embrace the conventional style of leadership," said Judy Schoenberg, director of research and outreach at the Girl Scout Research Institute. "It's simply not how they want to be leaders. Girls today appear to be redefining leadership in terms of being more inclusive and serving a larger purpose."

Some 68 percent of survey respondents said they would want to be leaders who stand up "for their beliefs and values," and 59 percent said that they would like to be a leader "who tries to change the world for the better." Both groups agreed that "in our society, it is more difficult to become a leader for a woman than a man."

For years, Girl Scouts have been known and admired for providing girls with vast opportunities to help them build leadership skills. The New Girl Scout Leadership Experience, which is currently launching in councils across the nation, is committed to helping girls discover, connect and take action - three Girl Scout keys to leadership.
